The Danville Town Council is set to hold its next – and potentially final – public hearing on proposed changes to the town’s lighting and landscaping assessment district (LLAD) fee schedule, with votes set to be counted and announced next month.

It’s been more than six weeks since ballots were sent to property owners in Danville by April 4 asking for their approval of proposed changes to the LLAD assessment schedule, with the move requiring a simple majority in order to pass.

The topic was discussed at the council’s Feb. 4 and March 18 meetings, the former of which resulted in the council voting to adopt a resolution that kicked off the process of forming a new LLAD, and the latter of which resulted in the council approving a preliminary engineer’s report on the topic and scheduling the upcoming public hearing.

The public hearing marks the next step in the legal process for the proposed new district and associated fee schedule changes, with tabulation of ballots set to kick off the following day. The public is invited to observe the ballot counting process during business hours at the Community Meeting Room in the Danville Town Offices.

According to Town Manager Joe Calabrigo, the existing assessment district and fee structure – which have not been updated since 2003 – means that LLAD expenditures by the town are no longer keeping pace with the revenue coming in under the current district and schedule, making it one of the only areas in which the town is operating at a deficit amid an otherwise healthy financial outlook.

The Danville Town Council is set to meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday (May 20). The agenda is available here.

Tabulation of ballots is set to kick off the following day on Wednesday (May 21), with results to be announced at the June 3 Town Council meeting.
