The Danville Town Council is set for talks this week on a potential deal with the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District that would allow for a town-owned property to be temporarily used as a fire station while a permanent station undergoes renovations.

Under the proposal, the fire district would lease the former town office site at 510 La Gonda Way and foot the bill for renovations to the current infrastructure that would allow it to be used as a temporary fire station while the district’s Station 31 at 800 San Ramon Valley Blvd. is rebuilt.

“The Fire District and Town have looked at Town owned properties to identify a potential site for this temporary relocation. After this review, both Town and Fire District staff believe the best option is 510 La Gonda,” City Attorney Robert Ewing wrote in a staff report.

Wednesday’s study session discussion is set to be informational only, with town staff seeking feedback from the council on a number of key factors identified in talks up to this point. That includes the site’s new zoning under the current housing element as multifamily residential, and its identification as a housing opportunity site.

According to Ewing’s staff report, residential development for the site could still be on the horizon should the council agree to a temporary lease with SRVFPD. The proposed timeline for a residential project in the housing element is an RFP process by the end of 2026, the selection of a developer by 2027, and the beginning of construction by the end of 2028.

“After speaking with housing consultants, the Town can still achieve this timeline by pursuing the early steps in the process while the Fire District is still using the property and certainly within the 2031 horizon of the housing element,” Ewing wrote.

SRVFPD estimates that it will need a temporary location for staff at Station 31 for between 18 and 24 months.

Should the council elect to move forward with the proposed plan, it would need to reach a lease agreement with the fire district that would be subject to both council and SRVFPD board approval.

The Danville Town Council is set to meet at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday (Nov. 12). The agenda is available here.
