The Dublin Unified School District recently named John Alexander, lead custodian at Amador Elementary School, as the 2024-25 overall Classified Employee of the Year.
Alexander said he was honored and shocked to receive the award. “I can’t even find the words for it, but it’s a true honor to receive something like that and it makes me feel good inside,” he said.
Alexander has worked at DUSD full-time since 2013, beginning with his role as a night-shift custodian. For about seven years, he cleaned schools across the district during his 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. workday.
By 2020, he began working the mid-shift at Amador. Then in August 2024, he rose to become the lead custodian at the school.
“As long as I see a smile at the end of the day on them, I know I’ve done my work,” he said of students.

Alexander is a beloved member of the school community, said DUSD director of maintenance and operations Tim Leal.
“John Alexander exemplifies dedication, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to the students and staff at Amador Elementary,” Leal said. “For over a decade, he has gone above and beyond to ensure that our schools are clean, safe, and welcoming environments for learning.”
He was selected as the overall honoree from winners of an annual staff recognition program. In this program, peer-nominated individuals are identified for their hard work and dedication.
The DUSD Classified Employees of the Year and their respective categories include Will Crozier in food and nutrition, Karen Chamberlain in security, Minoo Etemadnia in paraprofessional, Tabitha Leni in clerical and Alexander in custodial.
“Our classified staff are the unsung heroes of our district, playing an essential role in every aspect of our schools,” DUSD Superintendent Chris Funk said. “Their hard work and expertise are the foundation that allows our educators to focus on teaching and our students to focus on learning. We are deeply grateful for their contributions.”
District-level Employees of the Year were submitted in their respective categories to the Alameda County Office of Education Classified Employee of the Year competition.
