For the second year in a row, an SRVUSD student is set to be representing students throughout Contra Costa on the county board of education.
Dougherty Valley High School junior Ishaan Savla was named last month as one of the two student members on the Contra Costa County Board for 2024-25, following the departure of Monte Vista High School’s Daphne Milich at the end of her term in June.
Milich and El Cerrito High School student Sophia Nguyen, whose term also expired last month, were the county education board’s first-ever student members, appointed for the new positions in September 2023.
Savla was selected to join the board alongside El Cerrito High School’s Luke Wilson for the second-ever student board member term on the board out of a pool of 35 applicants from eight different school districts and 11 high schools, according to an announcement from CCOE last month.
“We are thrilled to welcome Ishaan and Luke to the Board,” Board President Mike Maxwell said in the county’s announcement on June 14. “Their impressive accomplishments and commitment to their communities stood out among a talented group of applicants. We look forward to their contributions and are confident they will provide invaluable insights on behalf of their peers.”
Savla serves as a current policy associate with the civic engagement California Voters of Tomorrow, according to an announcement from SRVUSD last week, as well as the city of San Ramon’s Teen Council, in addition to being a co-sponsor of state legislation aimed at making grant pipelines and training programs for teachers more accessible.
“I am excited to begin this journey as a student member of the county’s Board of Education,” Savla said in CCOE’s announcement. “I aim to connect with special needs students and forge more sister-school partnerships where student-led clubs and organizations bridge students across the county. I want to ensure that the voices of students are present in the conversation about educational policies and priorities.”
SRVUSD Superintendent CJ Cammack cited the importance of student representation at both the district and county levels in an announcement on July 1.
“Student voice is integral to inform student-centered practices in SRVUSD and I am thrilled to hear that Ishaan will serve in a role that elevates student voice at the County level,” Cammack said. “I am confident that he will be a valuable addition to the Board and provide an inclusive perspective from students across Contra Costa.”
Savla and Wilson are set to attend their first meeting as student board members on Aug. 14 at 5 p.m.
