A food scientist and longtime San Ramon resident with children in elementary and high schools in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District is seeking to venture into a new role, throwing her hat into the ring for the upcoming school board election.
Political newcomer Sukriti Sehgal is challenging incumbent Area 3 trustee Laura Bratt in the upcoming November election, with both candidates now in the thick of campaign season and set to square off in two candidate forums.
Sehgal said in her candidate statement that her role as a parent of children ranging in age offers her a “front row seat” to challenges students face and the ability to “see improvement opportunities every day.”
“I want to see our children fulfill their dreams and ambitions, and grow into responsible citizens who contribute positively to the community, country, and planet,” Sehgal said. “To achieve this, we need an environment that supports academic excellence while nurturing their physical, emotional, and mental well-being.”
Sehgal added that she would connect with both students and parents, and serve as a voice for concerns and challenges that come with “an ever-changing landscape of technology, expectations, and success measures.”
“I will address these issues and ensure that our schools provide a stimulating and supportive environment for students to thrive,” Sehgal said.
On her campaign site, Sehgal listed her priorities as enabling student success, amplifying community voices, better budget use, and mental and emotional health for students.
She pointed to her resume and career trajectory as a food scientist with a master’s degree from UC Davis, where she worked as an adjunct professor, as well as her work at Fortune 500 companies and startups. Sehgal has worked for the food science company Eat Just Inc. – makers of the popular, plant-based “JUST Egg” products – since 2016, according to LinkedIn.
“I have experience uniting teams with conflicting priorities to achieve common goals,” Sehgal said. “I believe incorporating diverse viewpoints strengthens us and helps reach holistic solutions.”
Sehgal has lived in San Ramon with her husband since completing her education at UC Davis in 2003.Â
“I am passionate and optimistic about bringing the needed changes to the community I have called home for 20 years,” Sehgal said.

Sehgal and Bratt are set for a series of joint appearances in upcoming election forums in October. The first is set for Tuesday (Oct. 1) at 10 a.m. in the San Ramon Community Center, hosted by the Danville Alamo Walnut Creek and San Ramon branches of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
On Saturday (Oct. 5), Sehgal and Bratt are both set to appear at another forum hosted by PFLAG San Ramon Valley, the San Ramon Valley Diversity Coalition, and Asian Pacific American Public Affairs. The location is set to be made available upon registration, which is available here.
AAUW is hosting its second SRVUSD school board candidate forum at Iron Horse Middle School on Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m.Â
