The San Ramon Valley Unified School District Board of Education is set to vote Tuesday on a package of proposed “budget-balancing solutions” that would address the $3.5 million in cuts the district is required to make in the current academic year.
While this year’s election appears to have seen one piece of good news for the district amid ongoing budget struggles – the passage of Measure Q, which is set to renew the district’s existing $144 parcel tax for an additional nine years – SRVUSD continues to face longer-term budget challenges requiring $3.5 million in cuts in the current academic year, which the district committed to in the budgeting process.
District staff are proposing six different cost-cutting measures for the board to consider a vote on at their upcoming meeting, which would amount to a $3,521,673 reduction in expenses.
These measures consist of eliminating both premium rates and the resident program for substitute teachers for $488,050 in savings, switching to a restricted funding source for some administrative salaries for a savings of $1,499,623, hiring freezes for noon duty and custodial services at school sites and within district departments for savings of $105,000 and $731,000 respectively, a 10% reduction to unencumbered funds in the school site discretionary budget for a savings of $106,000, and a spending freeze on non-essential items in the department budget for a savings of $592,000.
The school board is set to consider a vote on the proposed cuts Tuesday (Nov. 19) at 6 p.m. The agenda is available here.
