The San Ramon Valley’s Del Amigo High School was recognized last week among the best continuation high schools in all of California.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond revealed the California Department of Education’s 2025 Model Continuation High Schools on Feb. 19, with Del Amigo among 74 awardees and the only Tri-Valley campus on the list.

San Ramon Valley Unified School District officials said the award “highlights Del Amigo’s commitment to providing students at risk of not graduating the opportunity to participate in innovative academic programs, flexible learning opportunities, and comprehensive support services.”

“We are incredibly honored to receive this recognition,” Del Amigo principal Lynsie Castellano added in a district press release. “It is a testament to the determination of our students, staff, and community. At Del Amigo, we strive to create an environment where every student feels valued and empowered to reach their goals.”

Del Amigo, which operates on a portion of the Dougherty Valley High School campus in San Ramon, leverages “a personalized, supportive, small school environment” with trauma-informed practices and an emphasis on the district’s “learner profile” to help students achieve positive outcomes in the classroom as well as access to counseling and mental health services, according to SRVUSD officials.

They added that the state award serves to recognize “the school’s ongoing efforts to provide transformative educational opportunities for students in need of credit recovery or an alternative school design.”

“This recognition reflects the commitment of Del Amigo’s staff in providing every student the opportunity to succeed. The school’s innovative and compassionate approach to education makes a lasting impact on students and we are incredibly proud of this well-deserved honor,” SRVUSD Superintendent CJ Cammack said.

Three other Contra Costa County continuation high schools made the list, including Olympic High School in the neighboring Mt. Diablo Unified School District. No Alameda County campuses earned the award.
