The San Ramon Valley School District board will meet Monday to discuss the district’s personalized learning initiatives and non-district courses.

The special board workshop is set for 5-7 p.m. in the district board room at 699 Old Orchard Drive in Danville.

The district’s personalized learning initiatives program was introduced in 2018. It aims to meet the needs of students who require alternative methods of learning or a more flexible schedule and also serves as a way to reduce class sizes without increasing general fund costs. The program includes expanded opportunities to meet physical education requirements and a chance to earn credits toward graduation with out-of-school internships. Additionally, the district offers a Language School Program that offers students credit toward graduation for language coursework not offered at district schools.

Another component of the district’s personalized learning program is non-district courses; up to 40 units of non-district classwork can be included in students’ transcripts from the district, with a limit of 20 units in any one subject or in a single academic year.

The personalized learning initiatives program has attracted increased attention this year, including at meetings in February and March where the board preliminarily approved teacher layoffs, including major cuts to world languages. Teachers and parents during public comment at both meetings expressed concerns that the district’s personalized learning initiatives program was putting the quality of the district’s programs at risk and offered an inferior model of learning for students.

School officials acknowledged the concerns, and in April the board received an informational presentation about the program, allowing board members to ask questions and explore concerns.

Monday’s workshop is expected to be a continuation of that conversation with a focus on non-district courses, including current parameters, participation trends and motivations for student participation.

The workshop is open to the public and will be livestreamed. The complete agenda is here.
