The race for at least one school board seat up for election this year is set to be contested, with a new face making her way onto the political landscape and seeking to challenge the incumbent’s bid for reelection.
Danville resident Karin Shumway made her campaign announcement earlier this month at the town’s annual Kiwanis Parade and festivities on July 4, days after incumbent Area 2 trustee Shelley Clark announced that she would seek a second term in the seat.
“I decided to run a couple of months ago after I was approached by a teacher in the district letting me know that the Area 2 trustee position was coming up for re-election and encouraged me to consider running for the position,” Shumway told DanvilleSanRamon. “After a few days of consideration, I felt strongly this was something I was supposed to do for my children and for our community.”
With five children currently enrolled in the district, Shumway said that she has become familiar over the years with schools throughout the district by being closely involved with its teachers, classrooms, and campuses.
“We have loved our experience in the district, especially at the elementary level,” Shumway said.
Shumway’s platform seeks to emphasize parental involvement, fiscal responsibility, and school safety.
“You can sum up what I’m all about with a short list — wife, mom, believer, friend, volunteer, connector, listener, cheerleader, advocate,” Shumway said on her campaign site.”I give my all in everything I do and am passionate about loving others and supporting people on their unique journeys.”
Area 2 represents a majority of the Town of Danville on the eastern side of I-680, extending east toward Blackhawk where it shares a border with Area 5 and north toward Diablo and Alamo, where it shares a border with Area 1.
With the election filing deadline coming up on Aug. 9, Shumway is so far the only candidate seeking to challenge an incumbent for one of the two seats up for reelection in November, which includes the Area 3 seat that incumbent Laura Bratt is seeking reelection to.
