Trustees have approved new courses that include teaching Chinese and self defense for the high school students in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.

Chinese Mandarin, levels one, two, and three, was approved as a course to be taught at all the high schools, at the board meeting Feb. 6 on Old Orchard Drive.

Additionally, courses on kickboxing and power walking were approved.

Mandarin is open to students who are in grades nine through 12. Kickboxing and power walking are open to 10th- to 12th-graders.

Monte Vista High School staff made the request for the self-defense courses. And staff from the soon-to-open Doughtery Valley High School submitted the request for Chinese Mandarin.

“All the high schools will have these courses,” said Debbie Gluchowski, of the district Educational Services department.
