Two cultural groups from Alamo plan to award $5,000 to the most inspiring story about a Chinese patient recovering from mental problems.

The Culture to Culture Foundation and the Chinese American Mental Health Network, located in Alamo, are soliciting applications for the Mental Health Warrior Award. Chinese patients with mental illnesses are encouraged to apply. Their friends, families and community volunteers are also invited to participate.

Mental health professionals who wish to apply must speak from their experience of being psychiatric patients themselves or having family members in similar struggles. Applicants who are under 18 can apply with consent from their parents or legal guardians. Eligible individuals are allowed to nominate others with their consent.

Eligible applicants must have used their experiences to help others face life challenges, overcome stigma, instill hope and heal. The winning warrior will be awarded $5,000. A number of qualified candidates, selected by a reviewing committee, will be awarded a prize for their participation.

Applications should include an essay in either Chinese or English of no more than 2,000 words. The essay must entail a true journey leading to recovery and community service. A separate page of names, phone/fax numbers, addresses and/or e-mails of two reference persons should be included.

The application deadline is Dec. 31 and should be sent to P.O. Box 665, Alamo 94507. For more information, call 938-9988.
