The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District responded to a house fire that broke out on the second floor of a two-story single family home located at 14 Molina Court in San Ramon at 3:52 a.m. this morning, March 24.

A total of five engines, two trucks, one paramedic ambulance, five chief officers and one fire investigator were dispatched to the scene.  The first engine crew arrived to find the second story completely involved in flames.

Firefighting efforts were immediately hampered due to several animals including pit bulls that prevented them from entering the home. Crews fought the fire from the exterior of the home while waiting for Contra Costa County Animal Services to arrive.

A tenant who rented a room on the first floor was awakened by a crackling noise.  From the bottom of the staircase he could see the second story completely involved in flames.  He ran to a neighbor’s house who quickly dialed 911.

The two tried to fight the fire with a garden hose but were unsuccessful.  At that time, the owners were believed to be in the home.

Animal Services arrived on scene and secured the animals. Firefighters started a search and rescue operation.  It was later determined that the owners were not in the home.

The fire was contained at 4:43 a.m. and crews continued with extinguishment, salvage and overhaul for the remainder of the morning.  During salvage efforts crews discovered several more animals including reptiles and cats.  Animal Services assisted in placement of surviving animals, which included three dogs, three lizards, six snakes and several cats. Confirmed deceased animals included one snake, one lizard and two cats.

The home did not have electricity or gas and alternate means were being used for lighting and heat such as generators and candles. The candles are a probable cause; however, the fire is still under investigation.

Point of origin was determined to be on the second level of the dwelling.  Damage is estimated at $350,000 in structural damage and an additional $125,000 in content loss.

During electrical outages, battery operated lamps and flashlights should be used, the Fire Protection District announced.  For more information on candle safety, visit www.srvfire.ca.gov.
