A man who was killed in a crash on southbound I-680 in Danville this morning was struck while waiting for a flat tire to be changed, said California Highway Patrol Officer Tom Maguire.
The victim and a second man were driving a full-sized gold Nissan pickup truck on the highway just north of El Pintado at about 10:20 a.m. when they got a flat tire.
They pulled over onto the right shoulder and called a roadside assistance company for help.
The roadside assistance worker arrived and parked directly behind the pickup truck.
The two men from the pickup truck walked up a dirt embankment to be out of the way of traffic while the roadside assistance worker changed the tire, Maguire said.
The roadside assistance worker had just finished replacing the tire and was removing the jack from underneath the pickup truck when a white Pacific Gas and Electric Co. boom truck and a blue Chevrolet Coupe collided with each other.
The crash caused the Chevrolet to veer off the right side of the road and up the dirt embankment, striking the roadside assistance vehicle, the pickup truck and the two men standing on the embankment, Maguire said.
One of the men, a 25-year-old Pacheco resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. As of this afternoon, officials still did not know the man’s name.
The second man, a 30-year-old Concord resident, was transported to John Muir Medical Center with road rash. He is expected to survive his injuries.
The driver of the Chevrolet, 23-year-old Crystal Chong, a Culver City resident, was taken by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center for treatment of pain and is also expected to survive.
The PG&E worker and the roadside assistance worker were not injured, Maguire said.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but there was no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved.
The No. 4 lane was closed for about two hours while the CHP and emergency crews worked to clear the crash and investigate what happened.
