Kids! Pull out your video equipment. It’s time to begin filming for the annual Street Smarts “Be Reel!” Video Contest for middle school students throughout the San Ramon Valley.
The fall 2009 theme is “Bicycling Safety: Dangerous Distractions.” Videos must be submitted by 4 p.m., Monday, Nov. 2.
The videos must creatively illustrate the dangerous distractions that bicyclists might encounter, which may include (but are not limited to): talking or texting on mobile phone, talking with friends, wearing headphones, looking at objects to the side, adjusting clothing or helmet.
The contest judges 60-second public service announcement (PSA) videos about traffic safety.
Each fall and spring a new traffic safety theme is announced, and students create the traffic safety video for the corresponding theme. The fall and spring submissions are judged each year in April.
The Top 10 videos from each theme (up to 20 videos total) will move on as finalists in the “Street Smarts Mini Short” category at the 2010 Danville International Children’s Film Festival in May and will be aired on cable television.
All students who enter will receive a $5 gift card to one of dozens of stores and eateries. All advisers (parents or teachers) who participate will receive a $20 gift card.
Finalists will receive a $25 gift card. The grand prize for each member of the video production team (up to four students) will receive an iPod nano with digital docking station.
First prize for each member of the video production team (up to four students)is an iPod shuffle.
Each video entry is eligible to win more great prizes at a drawing held during the judging of the finalists at the 2010 Danville Children’s International Film Festival. Students must be present to win.
Finalists of the Fall contest theme will be announced in December 2009. The winners of both fall 2009 and spring 2010 contests will be announced at the 2010 Danville Children’s International Film Festival tentatively scheduled for May 2010.
Each video will be evaluated based on:
1. 50 percent – Content: Does it follow the theme and is it persuasive?
2. 25 percent – Creativity: Does it hold our interest?
3. 25 percent – Video Production: Can we see it and hear it clearly?

Students who are planning to do a video might like to contact East Bay Regional Parks to learn about the Volunteer Bicycle Patrol regarding bicycle safety on trails. Call Heather Marlais at 510-690-6580 for more information.
How about a video that basically discourages kids from riding their bikes because drivers these days are too distracted to pay attention to the kids on the bikes.
Riding bikes is a great way for kids to get exercise and to get to and from school. But…. is it worth it when the Danville parents are too distracted to stop talking on their phones or multi-tasking while driving their kids to school or events.
How about more police presence at important cross walk areas before and after school to give out citations to people who endanger our kids.
