Come gather round the Old Oak Tree on Diablo Road at 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 27, for the 33rd traditional Lighting of the Old Oak Tree, which kicks off the Christmas season in Danville. Festivities begin at 5:15 as neighboring businesses open their doors to serve hot drinks and cookies. Music will be provided by the San Ramon Valley High School Choir and the Danville Girls Chorus Concert Choir under the direction of Ken Abrams from 5:15-6:15 p.m.

Father Christmas and the Snow Angel will help light the tree at approximately 6:15 p.m. The magic continues downtown afterward as the merchants welcome residents to enjoy refreshments and view their wares. Musical entertainment will also be featured downtown until about 8:30 p.m.

The Shannon B. Jones Law Group, located next to the Oak Tree at 300 Diablo Road, has created a sponsorship with the Bay Area Crisis Center and is holding a drive to support the Crisis Nursery for the holidays. The nursery is looking for any types of donations, but in particular needs the following for the children: soft bristle toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, new toys, books, clothes and games.

“We invite all of our clients, friends of the firm, as well as the county to visit us the evening of the Tree Lighting, enjoy hot chocolate and desserts, donate a new toy or book, and celebrate as we once again serve as the chair for this wonderful event,” said Jones.

The law group’s fundraising begins the evening of the lighting of the Old Oak Tree and extends until Dec. 22, when employees will deliver the donations to the Crisis Nursery.

Most downtown businesses will offer a chance to get a jump on holiday shopping. And this includes the Museum of the San Ramon Valley, at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Prospect. This evening is a good time to peruse its holiday gifts, including the ultimate history book, “Vintage Danville,” other local history books, miniatures of historic buildings, and stocking stuffers.

The exhibit, “Christmas Memories,” is guaranteed to get families in the holiday spirit with Barbie dolls – she’s turning 50 this year – and a great Pooh Corner as well as original books and stuffed animals from the collection of retired teacher Alice Reynolds.

A new Santa’s workshop features the Coca Cola version Jolly Old St. Nick, with a coke on his desk. And – Santa will also be there in person to greet youngsters of all ages.
