A preview of the Veterans Memorial Building project at the Alamo home of Mark and Becky Pine received an exciting boost when “The Hero of the Hudson” made his appearance.
The scheduled speaker was Lorrie Sullenberger on the topic, “A Whirlwind of Heroism.” She described the many invitations that she and her husband have received, including to Buckingham Palace and the Oscar ceremonies.
After her talk, Lorrie surprised everyone by announcing that her husband Sully had re-arranged his schedule and was able to attend the evening’s event.
Capt. Chesley (Sully) Sullenberger then entered the room to astonished and enthusiastic applause. He spoke on the importance of veterans’ organizations and the vital role they have in American life. He singled out the Veterans Memorial Building as being especially important to the San Ramon Valley.
The Sullenbergers were honored by being presented with the very first Veterans Building Challenge Coin by retired Navy Rear Adm. Russell Gorman, a member of the board of directors of the Veterans Memorial Building project. By tradition, a challenge coin is presented to the recipient with a handshake. Additional challenge coins will be presented to other persons and groups who make significant contributions to the project.
A number of elected officials were on hand to show their support for the Veterans Memorial Building project. Among them were U.S. Rep. Jerry McNerney, San Ramon Mayor Abram Wilson, Danville Mayor Newell Arnerich, San Ramon Council Member Scott Perkins, and Danville Councilwomen Karen Stepper and Candace Andersen.
For information on how to contribute to the project or how to volunteer, contact the Capital Campaign office at 362-9806 or visit the project Web site at www.srvVeteransHall.org.
