About 4,545 customers in the Bay Area were without power this morning, according to PG&E officials.
The vast majority of those outages are in Santa Cruz County, where crews were working to restore power to 3,175 customers as of 8:30 a.m. today, PG&E spokesman Kory Raftery said.
An additional 650 customers in the East Bay, 400 in the South Bay, 300 on the Peninsula and 20 in the North Bay were also without power as of 8:45 a.m. today, according to PG&E.
“Every storm has its challenges, but this one has been particularly strong,” Raftery said. “Not only have we seen high winds and torrential downpours, but also thunder, lightening, hail and even tornado warnings.”
Raftery said crews worked all night to restore power, with mutual aid forces from other utility companies and contract crews being called in to help.
Santa Cruz County has been particularly difficult, he said, because there’s limited access in many parts of the mountains.
It’s also easy for mud and terrain to break loose and slide into power poles in that area, he said.
PG&E has gotten a lot of calls about downed power lines this week, Raftery said. Anyone who sees a downed power line should assume it’s energized and stay away from it.
Customers can report power outages or downed lines by calling (800) 743-5002.
