The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning at 1:10 p.m. this afternoon for Contra Costa County then canceled it at about 2:05 p.m.

Weather spotters reported a funnel cloud near Brentwood that was moving southeast at 5 mph. The tornado was expected to be six miles southwest of Discovery Bay by 1:20 p.m., according to the weather service.

A shelter in place was temporarily in effect for Discovery Bay.

    This morning, Alamo’s weather historian provided answers to tornadoes in our area. The last touch-down of a funnel cloud was 1973 in the east end of Dublin. Tornadoes are rare in the central valley including the Byron area. Most funnel clouds were seen south of Fresno during the last century.

    In the 1970’s, a funnel cloud tore a hole in the roof of AMPEX in Redwood City. But the chance of a house landing on the wicked witch of the east remains unlikely.
