Soccer fans saw more than the crosstown rivalry game between Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley high schools last Thursday. They saw Matt Zahner, boys varsity coach at MVHS, receive this year’s North Coast Section Honor Coach Award from Gil Lemmon, NCS Commissioner of Athletics.
“It is in honor of his service to the sport of coaching over time,” said Lemmon.
Zahner has also coached at SRVHS, at Athenian School and was head coach of Mustang Soccer league so he knows his goals. His teams have been to NCS championships several times, said Lemmon, plus he’s served on soccer boards.
NCS includes almost all of Contra Costa County, most of Alameda County, 17 schools in San Francisco, then goes up the coast to Crescent City for a total of 168 schools in 21 different soccer leagues. They can all nominate coaches for the Honor Coach Award.
“Names are forwarded to the NCS office and we have a committee of individuals who represent geographic areas of sections,” explained Lemmon. “They meet and look at applications, based on recommendations from the league, the school and accomplishments and their service to the sport.”
“It’s quite an honor to be selected,” he noted.
