Basketball parents and fans at San Ramon Valley High School watched last week’s games with particular interest. Many of them had pledged money for each point scored during the “Hoops for Haiti” fundraiser.

The leadership class set up a booth to collect payment and hand out donation bracelets at each of the games, for boys and girls varsity, junior varsity and frosh.

“It was heartwarming for me to see girls, as the people went out, calling out, ‘Hoops for Haiti! Hoops for Haiti!” said event organizer Gary Hernbroth, whose son Michael plays on the junior varsity team. Some people gave money per point, others just made flat donations.

Spectators were asked to donate $1 for each point the SRV teams scored, to be sent to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund to help in the relief efforts for the earthquake victims. This was added to the funds raised by the students in their other endeavors, which include a concert and sales of tote bags and T-shirts.

The total fundraising by the school for Haiti was up to $7,600, which also will go to Partners in Health and the Haitian Health Foundation.

San Ramon Valley won all of the games, noted Hernbroth. And so did the relief funds.
