Dora Wedekind is bringing her love of art and comic books to Danville kids as she prepares to teach Comic Book Kids, a class starting Wednesday that lasts through June.

Not just any drawing class, Wedekind gives students a general introduction to comic books. Curriculum covers everything from creating faces with emotions to character development.

“It’s really amazing what the kids come up with,” she said. “They’re so creative. I’ve had kids to stories about mustard and ketchup, school supplies coming to life at night, superheros and even themselves.”

Taking kids’ ideas, she will help them craft a storyline, often with lessons including games and activities.

In the end, students develop their own hard bound comic book, complete with cover designs and advertisements.

Wedekind said each class is different, especially if she’s catering to certain age groups. Her background is in art, obtaining a bachelor’s degree at UC Berkeley, and her day job is in teaching.

The class is for children ages 6 to 13, with classes held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays from April 21 to June 9 at Hap Magee Ranch Park, Magee House. There will also be a summer camp from 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays in July. The cost is $120 for residents or $144 for non-residents, plus at $10 materials fee. To register, visit www.danvillerecguide.com or call the Danville Community Center at 314-3400.
