It’s not often that one can have fun and help a wounded veteran, but a golf outing set for October promises just that.
The outing is sponsored by the Diablo Valley Veterans Foundation to benefit Sentinels of Freedom, a group that helps wounded vets find a home, get a career, a car and become financially stable.
Carla Goulart is development director for the Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation. Goulart said the event is Oct. 4 at Diablo Country Club, with all proceeds going to the program.
There are three ways to get involved. For $375 each golfer will get two dinners, a $50 gift certificate for pro shop, a wind shirt and a barbecue lunch. Non-golfers can attend the dinner for $95. There’s also a live and silent auction, and Sentinals is accepting donations for those auctions, too.
Corporate sponsorship is available as well.
Goulart said the event is to raise scholarship money for the program that teams a vet with six to ten volunteer mentors
“The mentors, they really guide that sentinel veteran over a four-year time in conjunction with us,” Goulart said. “We don’t stop until they are hired by a corporation that matches their goals and their capabilities.”
Although the program is based in San Ramon, Goulart said it helps vets nationwide.
“We work with businesses and corporations and foundations all across the united states,” she said.
So far, Sentinals has awarded 58 scholarships, and 20 of those have graduated from the program, becoming self-sufficient after being wounded.
