This year’s Senior Volunteer Awards will offer something new: Renowned magician Dr. J.D. Zhang will be there to entertain.

“We are very pleased to have Dr. Zhang from China perform a worldwide popular art performance of ‘Change of Face,'” said Chia-Chia Chien of Alamo, who heads up the awards sponsored by her Culture to Culture Foundation. “He will be performing at Sen. Feinstein’s event next week.”

Chien announced today that the judges for the third annual Senior Volunteer Awards in Contra Costa County received 26 nominations. The oldest nominee is 96, she said. Four of them are older than 90, and seven are older than 80.

All of the nominees will be honored Oct. 17 along with the four finalists, who will receive cash prizes.

“The names are kept secret until the awards ceremony, adding to the surprise. I equate it with the Emmy or Academy awards,” Chien said.

“These awards are to recognize seniors providing voluntary service to our community in the hope that it will inspire others to serve,” she explained. “Our focus is on what the older generation can do, not what they can’t do.”

She noted that one of the previous winners volunteered his help with this year’s awards.

“I want to give our special thanks to Mr. Ray Zenoni for his talented graphics design and printing,” Chien said. He was nominated in 2008 for his work at the Volunteer Center of the East Bay.

The public is invited to the free Senior Volunteer Awards Ceremony, which will take place from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 17, at The Kensington, 1580 Geary Road in Walnut Creek. The last two events had high attendance and reservations are needed. RSVP to Chien at 362-3651 or email senioraward2010@culturetoculture.org.

In addition to the awards and the magic show, a huge array of refreshments with a Chinese theme will be prepared by volunteers.
