The Mustang FLASH Boys U-12 White Plus soccer team won the Championship game at the end-of-season Dick King Tournament vs. the Wolverines at Sycamore Valley Park in Danville on Saturday.

The 1 p.m. game was a defensive “nail biter” with the first half ending with a 0-0 tie. Stalwart reliable defenders Nathan Peers, Jack Sweetland, Jake Ober and Adam Garcia along with goalie Brian Mundelius were relentless in shutting down the Wolverine’s offense. Despite nonstop hustle by offensive standout Noah Prince along with Ben Breach, Nick Kurfirst and Alexander Scott, the game remained scoreless. The battle for midfield was led by Adam Lee, Jake Shurman, Ryan Booth, Mason Hinrichs and Grant Clark.

The ball traveled the length of the field in both directions for the remainder of the game until there were less than two minutes left in the second half. Flash was fortunate with Tyler Opacic stealing the ball and firing it left-footed at the goal. The Wolverines’ goalie made a brilliant effort to even get a hand on it, but Derek Galletly pounced on the loose ball and pushed it into the left corner of the net for the win.

The two teams had played before in the regular season with Flash coming out ahead 2-0. Flash closed the regular season 9-1-0.

As the first-place team in the tournament, Flash will advance to represent Mustang in the prestigious Season Sunset Tournament being held Dec. 4-5. Eight teams will compete in the tournament including teams from San Ramon, Livermore, Dublin, Pleasanton, Fremont and Newark.

The Mustang Soccer League has over 5,000 children registered from the Alamo, Danville, Diablo, San Ramon and Walnut Creek area. This represents nearly one out of every two students in the schools that fall within the coverage area.

The Dick King Tournament is named after a true champion of athletics in our community. He devoted countless hours to his children’s joy of sports and in turn to Mustang Soccer from 1979 to 1985, when he died at the age of 39 from complications from a water skiing accident. He was president of the League for two years, was a member of the Danville Parks and Recreation Commission, and was instrumental in the creation of multi-purpose sports fields behind Baldwin Elementary School.
