Danville Parks and Leisure Services Commission will meet at 7 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, to review potential improvement projects to Osage Station Park. The commission, along with consultants Verde Design Inc, will review the list of proposed improvements identified during the community input phase and determine the highest priority projects to be considered in the conceptual design.

Under Danville’s Capitol Improvement Project B-490, the Osage Station Park Master Plan Update (OSPU) allows for potential “reconfiguration of the park’s design to more efficiently utilize available space develop new amenities, and redesign/relocate existing facilities within the park to ensure efficient and effective use for future generations.”

In October, the Town conducted a survey to gather input regarding current and future needs of park users and found that 56.1 percent of park visitors consider Osage’s amenities to be “excellent.” At its regular meeting on Nov. 10, the commission hosted a community meeting which provided an opportunity for

residents to envision the future of Osage Station Park.

Between the survey and meeting, the commission was able to compile a list of ideas for renovation and/or modification by identifying items that were mentioned at least three times. Popular subjects included a dog park, parking, grass infields on baseball diamonds as well as a permanent field with a fence and the track.

Multiple mentions were made at the Nov. meeting about sports fields, according to the meeting minutes. Residents noted that Osage’s five soccer fields are never used at the some time and could be reduced in favor of smaller fields for T-ball games. Park users would also like lighting for night games.

While the addition of a skate park was a hot topic, 49.3 percent of survey-takers considered it unnecessary.

Still, “every idea that was presented multiple times is on the table, so the Commission will take all of the information via the survey and via the community input meeting” into consideration said Michelle Lacy, recreation services manager with the Town of Danville.

But while there are 25 or 30 items in multiple categories for the Commission to consider, the current budget is strictly for the OSPU design phase. Lacy said no budget has been designed for actual improvements to the park.

Once the commission designates the highest priority projects, Verde Designs will take the take the information and, hopefully, come back with design option by the first quarter of 2011.

“When a final plan is decided, it will have to be approved by the town council,” said Lacy, “So I’m hoping (to start the physical process) by the end of next year.”

Tonight’s meeting at the town meeting hall (201 Front Street) is open to the public. Survey results are available at Danville Town Offices, 510 La Gonda Way during normal business hours.

  1. Too bad we didn’t get this article until after the fact! After 12 years, I am no longer the soccermom or baseballmom. I would love to join forces with the 51.7% of the people who feel that a skatepark would be a good addition to the town of Danville. There is alot of young talent in the community and it would be great to support those kids interest!

  2. I go to Osage at least 5 times a week and would have loved to have had some input in the survey. The city council should have made the survey available online. I wish they would consider reopening the survey so the rest of us could submit our opinions. I would like to see a backboard added to the tennis courts and open 3-sided cement handball/racquetball courts which could also be used as a practice area for throwing baseballs/kicking soccer balls/throwing lacrosse balls/hitting tennis balls against when not in use for racquetball. the grassy area next to the tennis courts which tends to be too soggy for most activities would be a good location.

  3. @skatermom & parkuser:

Thanks for posting. I’m sorry that you missed the initial online survey. It was on the Town’s website http://www.danville.ca.gov for several weeks. During that time we notified the media as well as the subscribers to the Town’s E-News service that it was there.

If you would still like an opportunity to comment, there is a project page on the Osage Station Master Plan Update on the Town’s website. It can be found at http://www.ci.danville.ca.us/Capital_Projects/Projects/Osage_Station_Park_Master_Plan_Update/ . On that page you can read updates on the project, sign up for e-mail notifications regarding the plan update and leave your comments.

Recreation Services Manager Michelle Lacy has said that they are hoping to continue the discussions of the design at the park at the February meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Commission. That meeting is currently scheduled for February 9, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Town Meeting Hall, 201 Front Street.
