Hitoko Hagiwara, a Danville resident, serves tea Japanese-style to the cast of the upcoming production of “Madama Butterfly” by the Livermore Valley Opera as part of its efforts to present a realistic portrayal of Japanese culture.

Chorus members of the opera company are all volunteer singers from Tri-Valley communities who work with a professional stage director, conductor and principal singers. They enjoyed the tea experience and were seen leaving the rehearsal hall holding their hands and giggling in the demure fashion of a geisha.

Performances of “Madama Butterfly” will be held March 12-13 and 19-20, at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore. Hear stage director Brian Clay Luedloff talk about the upcoming production.

For tickets, go to www.livermorevalleyopera.com or call 373-6800.

Hagiwara teaches the complex tea ceremony privately and at universities, temples and at the San Francisco Cherry Blossom Festival and the San Francisco Asian Museum.
