People concerned about a proposed development near Magee Ranch had a chance to see the area from above Saturday.

Save Mount Diablo organized a three-mile hike of through the Sycamore Valley Regional Open Space Preserve, which adjoins the upper portion of the property under consideration for development.

“We will not be on any of the property that’s proposed for development,” said Jodi Bailey of Save Mount Diablo, who will lead the hike.

Bailey said the group organized the hike at the request of members who’ve contacted them, but so far, Save Mount Diablo hasn’t taken a stand one way or the other on the project, she said.

SummerHill Homes has proposed development of 64 homes on the eastern side of the property, which is 410 acres south of Diablo and Blackhawk roads. Four of the lots would be larger, for custom homes, and 60 would be on lots of a minimum of 10,000 square feet. A second potential phase on the western side of the property could add an additional 21 homes off Diablo and McCauley roads, with the remainder of the land designated permanent open space.

A group opposed to the project, tentatively called Save Our Creek, has gathered more than 400 signatures on a petition to block the development.

Both sides are awaiting the Environmental Impact Report due out this spring to see if the project will go ahead.

People who want to join the hike should prepare for wet weather, but Bailey’s hoping for some sunshine.

“If it’s at all clear, we should have some pretty spectacular views,” she said. “It’s a short but fairly significant climb.”

The hike is from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., rain or shine, and Baliey said she’d be there regardless of the weather.

Participants should meet at the parking area at the end of Sherburne Hills Road in Danville.

  1. The land was zoned with the intent to preserve the beauty of the area. The potential effect to the area, wild life and traffic is alarming. Unite against this atrocity.

  2. When our city officials and council members show a clear pattern of working for the interests of developers, and against the wishes of Danville residents, it is time to replace or recall them.
If I were a gambler, I would bet that this project eventually gets pushed through, even if in a slightly watered-down version. Because the ultra-wealthy always prevail.

  3. San Ramon tried to preserve this area in the recent election but somehow the voters trusted the county (broke) more than San Ramon (doing OK).

  4. Has anyone asked if this new devlopment will push Magee Ranch from Monte Vista H.S. to Dougherty Valley H.S.? Magee is on the boundry egde so will adding more homes push Magee to DV?

  5. With Green Valley Elementary at capacity (or full) in many grades, the school board will have to take a serious look at diverting students from many neighborhoods like Magee Ranch and Hidden Oaks to schools along Camino Tassajara. What do you think that’ll do to property values in those neighborhoods?
