Works from artists in the masters in fine arts programs at the California Institute of Integral Studies(CIIS) will be on display at the Village Theatre Art Gallery from Sept. 10 through Oct. 29.
“Offerings: Works of Text and Image” is a juried and invitational exhibit which features works of text and image, abstract painting, artist books, mixed media, comics, photography, sculpture and handmade postcards.
“Artists explore how their work allows them to give anew, re-give in new form what they have offered before or give back in new forms what has been offered to them,” said Cindy Shearer, exhibit curator and MFA interdisciplinary program director at CIIS.
Featured artists include Franceska Alexander, Salma Arastu, Jessa Brie Berkner, Jenelle Campion, Tricia Grame, Sarah Loomis, Aaron Rose, Nanci Price Scoular, Cindy Shearer, Tim Stapleton, Orlonda Uffre and April Zachary-Serr.
“What the artists say, how they use language in their work, their relationship to visual forms allows for multi-layered, multi-faceted offerings—and challenges viewers to inquire into what offering means for them and how they want to give,” Shearer said.
An opening reception for “mature audiences” will be held on Sept. 10 from 4:15 p.m. through 7:15 p.m. Poet Judy Grahn, musician Anne Carol, storyteller Jovelyn Richards, poet and playwright Genny Lim and Anne Bluethenthal and several dancers will be performing at the free reception.
The gallery will also hold a postcard making workshop on Thursday, Oct. 13 where participants will make a variety of cards using oil pastels and other natural materials.
