While U.S. auto manufacturers report increased profits, Black Friday reports show huge increases in shoppers and jobless claims increase, holiday shopping numbers remain up in the air. This week, Roving Reporter Stan Whaton went to the Danville Livery to ask residents How will your holiday purchases compare to last year?
Lori Ann Styles, Artist and volunteer teacher: I’ve always felt conservative when it comes to holiday purchases, and this year I’ll probably spend even less since so many people are out of work. I don’t want to be robbed of the joy of Christmas by the stress of Christmas shopping.
Karyn Wilkerson, Hair salon owner: I’m sure they’ll be down due to the economy. My friend and co-worker, Carmen, are doing OK here at the shop, and we’ll continue to keep things going.
Michelle Bosset, Homemaker: It’s going to be comparable, because years ago we eliminated buying for the adults. Now it’s all about buying for the kids. It’s about making it a magical time for them, even when the tough times come. The adults can go out and buy what they want anytime.
Ann-Marie Morrow, Mom: It’ll be a little less, more careful and thoughtful, spending in total this year. We got a puppy, which was our big expense, last year. My daughter and son will still get most things they asked for, because they’ve been great.
Kelly Tretter, Handbag designer: I think they’ll be similar. We might be more conservative, considering the economy doesn’t seem to be turning for the better. It’s probably wise to be more cautious than too aggressive on our spending this season.
Biased article when you only interview those out “shopping”, the very thing you are asking about. Those of us who will NOT be spending on Xmas were not at the stores to be interviewed. Too many of us are under-employed, un-employed or facing layoff or job transfers do to the economy. Instead of spending money on “STUFF” that none of us really need, we will spend time together and give to charity and those truly in need.
