As the Academy Award ceremony nears, San Ramon Valley residents are grabbing their popcorn and gabbing about the best flicks of the past year. This week, Roving Reporter Stan Wharton went to Danville Square to ask film buffs What was your favorite movie of 2011?
Christian Sommer, Financial services/marketing with Intel: “Moneyball.” A great hometown story about an underdog team that changed the way baseball is viewed and managed. The cast was great, especially Jonah Hill. I just hired the Peter Brand character he played in the movie as a speaker for a company event.
Steve Black, Builder: We often go to Academy Award parties but don’t see the movies. This year, however, we’re not planning to attend a party, but we’re prepared. We actually saw the movies nominated this time, and the most enjoyable movie for us was “Hugo.” The cinematography was spectacular. I also think George Clooney in “The Descendants” and Meryl Streep in “The Iron Lady” should get best actor/actress for their performances.
Kathleen Birtel, The Station volunteer: “The Artist.” For a month I told myself, “No way I’m going to see a black and white silent movie.” When it started capturing awards I thought this must be a movie I should see. My first words when it was over were, “Best picture!”
I gained respect for the producer, Harvey Weinstein for taking a chance on something that turned out brilliant.
Angela Bullard, Nurse: “Jack and Jill”
with Adam Sandler. He is darling as a male and a female. Although it wasn’t nominated for an Oscar, it should have been. It was a very funny movie.
Scott Mesick, Software professional: “The Artist.” It was clever. I love old classic films, and this really rang true. The music was great, too.
