Six new Chevrolet Caprice police cruisers are on patrol in Danville, four of which are now fitted with cameras. The Police Department purchased the vehicles at approximately $30,000 each, using money saved by allowing older Crown Victoria models on patrol longer than average.
“I’m very happy with them and I think the officers are too,” said Police Chief Steve Simpkins.
A typical patrol vehicle is replaced every 80,000 miles and while this may not seem like much to the average car owner, constant use by officers causes much quicker wears. A Danville P.D. Crown Victoria has between 140,000 and 150,000 miles on it, Simpkins said.
The new vehicles are roomier than the traditional Crown Vic, allowing officers to sit more comfortably with their utility belts and offering more legroom. The vehicles also have larger trunks for equipment.
The Danville Police Department has 13 patrol vehicles in its fleet as well as two motorcycles. In addition to the Caprices, the department also has 2 Chevrolet Impalas, which have driven approximately 50,000 miles.
