Governor Jerry Brown paid tribute Sunday to Sacramento Bee cartoonist Rex Babin, who passed away March 30 after a battle with cancer.
Brown declared Sunday, April 15 to be Rex Babin Day in a statement issued Sunday.
Babin, a 49-year-old Walnut Creek native, was inspired to be a cartoonist during a junior high field trip to the Los Angeles Times, Brown noted.
In his twelve years with the Sacramento Bee, Babin chronicled “the pitfalls and foibles” of California politics, Brown said.
“He had the unique ability to make biting comments in a way that still managed to put a smile on your face,” Brown said. “Those lucky enough to escape his scathing critique should feel slighted to have been overlooked.”
Babin is survived by his wife, Kathleen and son, Sebastian.
Babin’s cartoons can be viewed at www.sacbee.com/babin.
