The U.S. News and World Report recently released its list of top high schools in the nation. All San Ramon Valley Unified schools cracked the 200 mark in state rankings.

U.S. News surveyed 22,000 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Awarding gold, silver, or bronze medals based on state proficiency standards, how well they prepare students for college and other factors. Results are from the total number of public high schools that had 12th grade enrollment and sufficient data, primarily from the 2009-10 school year, to analyze. Nebraska was the only state that did not report enough data and therefore was not evaluated for any part of the rankings.

San Ramon Valley High School ranked 465th in the nation and received a gold medal. With a 24 to 1 student/teacher ratio, SRVHS scored 46.9 on college preparedness; 55 percent of students took the AP test and 44 percent passed.

Across town, Monte Vista High School ranked 770th in the nation and received a silver medal. The school as a 23:1 student/teacher ratio and scored 36.9 in college preparedness. Forty percent of Monte Vista students took the AP test and 36 percent passed.

Dougherty Valley High ranked 565th in the country with a silver medal. The school has just over 1,500 students and a 26:1 student/teacher ratio. Scoring 43.3 in college preparedness, 52 percent of students took an AP test and 40 percent passed.

California High scored the lowest in the district at 880, though it also received a silver medal. With 2,431students and 100 teachers, Cal operates at a 24:1 ratio and scored 34.4 in preparedness. Thirty-nine percent of students took an AP test and 33 percent passed.

Dublin High School was ranked 12th in the country and received a gold medal for its efforts.

Of the 2,407 schools ranked in California’s 551 districts, all four high schools came in above the 200 mark. SRVHS did best at 88, followed by Dougherty Valley (108), Monte Vista (144) and Cal High (171). Schools were judged based on student/teacher ratio, college readiness and academic performance index (API) score.

  1. Congrats to SRVHS for being the highest ranked high school in the District. I hope that the new principal, and now assistant principal, will continue to lead this fine school, the staff and students, in the right direction and help to develop upstanding citizens in partnership with the families and community.

  2. Heard on the radio yesterday that there was a mistake made regarding Dublin High School. The magazine had the student population somewhere in the 500 student range instead of the actual 1500 student range. This has dropped their rank well below number 12.
