For the second time in three years, the Monte Vista girls varsity tennis team has captured the North Coast Section Championships.
Round Hill Country Club played host to the NCS semis and finals on Saturday, Nov. 10, where several hundred spectators enjoyed nearly nine hours of tennis. Monte Vista got off to a strong start by beating Foothill High 6-1 in the semis and knocking them out of the tournament for the second year in a row. Tamalpais then beat Larkspur’s Redwood High in the other semifinal. This set up a rematch between M.V and Tam just like last year, where Tam won the NCS title in a narrow victory.
Tam got off to a fast start in the three-hour final match by winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Monte Vista’s Julia Golub at line two and Julia Tomczak at line three played well against two seasoned USTA tournament players, then the MV No. 3 doubles team of Hannah Clark and Lara Sirovica won in straight sets. Soon MV’s No. 4 singles Bailey Parsons won a straight set victory to even the match at 2-2 with three matches left to play.
MV’s undefeated No. 1 doubles team of Betsy Main and Danielle Yancey (and EBAL doubles champions) put their team ahead 3-2 in a tough straight set match. Tam’s No. 2 doubles team was only two points away from a straight set victory which would have evened out the match at 3-3 and set the stage for a dramatic showdown at No. 1 singles spot featuring MV’s Kaitlyn Haithcock (also undefeated in league and post season play, and the EBAL singles champion) and Tam’s Chelsea Hayashi that had just started.
Monte Vista’s No. 2 team of Megan Newell and Brianna Lane fought back to win a second set tie-break to extend to a 3rd set. Meanwhile, MV’s Haithcock battled in a tough first setter under the lights, thinking that the deciding match may come down to hers.
Then, momentum again shifted toward MV near the end of the match, as Haithcock won a close first set and Newell and Lane shortly thereafter clinched the NCS victory by winning their third set at No.2 doubles. Monte Vista got to celebrate again, as Haithcock won her match.
