Yum! Now’s the time to enjoy scrumptious summer fruits and vegetables. Roving reporter Stan Wharton stopped by the produce section of a market in Danville to ask shoppers: How are you taking advantage of the summer’s fresh fruits and vegetables? Click on the photos to see the answers — one woman even shares a recipe!
Audrey Barrie, housewife: I’m buying the rainbow carrots, which should be as delicious as they are pretty. I’m going to cook them on my George Foreman grill. I’m also buying a basil plant to go with my beefsteak and heirloom tomatoes. All this fresh produce cooking for just one lil’ ol’ lady widow — me.
Gerlinde Yarosz, retired nurse: My husband and I eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables this time of year, as we have a salad every day with our dinner. I have a great pasta recipe to go with a salad: I start with a slice of pancetta with pepper in it and cut it in small pieces and fry it. I add chopped garlic and saute it. Then I add a half glass of marinated artichokes, chopped. After simmering I pour over linguini with parmesan cheese on top.
Bev Schmitt, retired teacher: I love California’s abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables in the summer. I take advantage of this here and the Danville farmers market most Saturdays. I go early to avoid the crowds and get first choice. The cantaloupes at the farmers market are unbelievably sweet this time of year. I also like the fresh strawberries in my salads.
Pandora Lewis & Renee Molineux, Kings College (London) freshman & Carondelet HS track & field coach: It’s been fantastic to have the variety of summer salads to serve our foreign house guest, Pandora, and to share these great California crops with her. We’re able to make these vegetables as side dishes or combined with different meats and cheeses for a main course. My favorite thing to do is grill extra ears of corn and slice the kernels off the cob the next day and mix them with beans, tomatoes and feta. It’s Pandora’s favorite.
Kevin Nagle, retired computer broker: I’m a peach fan, and this year has been the best year I can remember. I also love the nectarines this year, and I’m going to try a couple of plums tonight. For vegetables, I’m a broccoli and corn person and both have been very good this year. Our fresh garden tomatoes (16 varieties) are to die for, and this New York boy is the farmer, so apologies to the local produce markets.
