The American Red Cross is set to host two blood drives in the San Ramon Valley where eligible blood donors can help prevent a summer blood shortage.

According to the Red Cross, fewer appointments are being made at blood donation centers and blood drives this summer than what is needed to ensure blood and platelets are continuously available for patients.

Blood donors with types O negative, B negative and A negative are especially needed.

Blood donors can donate at the following opportunities:

* July 15: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Atlas Lift Tech, 210 Porter Drive in San Ramon

* July 25: Noon to 6 p.m., San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church, 902 Danville Blvd. in Alamo

Blood and platelet donations are needed for patients with serious medical conditions: accident and burn, heart surgery, organ transplant, leukemia treatment, and cancer or sickle cell disease.

To learn more or make an appointment to donate blood, visit American Red Cross or call 1-800-RED CROSS.
