Gov. Jerry Brown has signed Assembly Bill 49 to authorize the creation of a Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness specialty license plate, and the money raised through the plate will fund the “Every Woman Counts” program — which provides low-cost and no-cost mammograms for women in need.

“As a mother, sister, friend, colleague, and in my role as an assemblymember, I have seen firsthand the devastating and far-reaching effect breast cancer has had on so many families in the state of California,” said bill author Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan, who represents the San Ramon Valley.

“Almost two years ago, a group of four courageous women, each with gripping stories about their struggle with this terrible disease, came to me with a great idea — a Pink Breast Cancer Awareness specialty license plate,” Buchanan added. “I cannot think of a better way to proudly display our support for women battling breast cancer and to remind all of us that early detection saves lives.”

Discovery Bay resident Heather McCullough, representing the “Survivor Sisters,” said, “We are so happy that we were able to reach a compromise with the Senate and that we finally can share the exciting news with our more than 7,500 supporters who have stood by us for the past two years. Our dream is finally becoming a reality and as we have always said, ‘when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.’ In our case we made pink lemonade!”

The California Department of Health Care Services will now work with the Department of Motor Vehicles to develop the plate.

DMV must have at least 7,500 commitments to purchase the plate, according to Buchanan.

  1. Isn’t this nice….

I remember when doctors stopped using the green snake logo on their California license plates. So now you ladies want all of us to know that the person driving this car has or had breast cancer. Big deal…there are so many other cancers out there…why are the breast cancer ladies always want to bring attention to their problem.

Also by the way…breast cancer fund raisers are a total fraud. How many billions are needed to figure our how to prevent and/or cure breast cancer.

You women have given researchers a license to steel. They love to keep playing with your life. And if you really think they want to find a cure for any cancer you are dreaming…A cure of any medical means they the doctors plus others are not needed. Nothing nicer to put yourself out of business and put your family out of their million dollar homes.

That’s all I have to save about that.

BUT NOW I AM GOING TO KNOW WHICH LADIES IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD AND IN MY TOWN HAVE OR HAD BREAST CANCER…LIKE PUTTING A NEON-SIGN OUT THERE..

Good luck broadcasting you medical problems. Believe that is all you are doing, letting others know your medical problem.

Thank you listening, Julia Pardini from Alamo

  2. I don’t care if people want to buy license plates to promote low cost mammograms since I think the exam should be free and in most health plans they are and they do not charge for them. But I don’t think just because one has a license plate that has a pink ribbon that that person has had breast cancer – maybe a relative did. So what? Let people spend their money on what they want to – even if it doesn’t lead to a cure for cancer. The intention of the license plate isn’t to raise funds for research it is to give free or low cost mammograms to those who can’t afford them.
