San Ramon Valley Unified sophomores have continued to excel in the English and math portions on the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).

Data released by the California Department of Education showing preliminary results of the 2013-14 exit exams shows that 98% of 2,358 San Ramon Valley school sophomores passed the English and math sections during the 2013-14 school year — the same percentages for the 2012-13 school year.

“We are extremely proud of our students who continue to pass this graduation exam at record rates. Our goal is for each and every one of our students to achieve at high levels,” San Ramon Valley schools superintendent Mary Shelton said.

All students in California public schools are required to pass the test in order to earn a high school diploma.

They take the exam for the first time in the 10th grade. Sophomores who do not pass it on the first try have two opportunities as juniors and five opportunities as seniors to retake the test.

San Ramon Valley’s passage rates of 98% surpassed Contra Costa County’s 86% mark for each English and math.

Other Tri-Valley school districts marks included Dublin Unified at a 94% pass rate for the English and math sections. Students in the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District had a 89% pass rate in the English section and 92% in the math section. Pleasanton Unified had a 96% pass rate in the English section and 97% in the math section.

The CAHSEE is administered on two different days — English on the first day followed by the math section on the second day. This can lead to students being absent for one of the exam dates, and those students will make up the section missed as a junior.

At California High School in San Ramon, 98& of the 617 students passed the English portion, and out of 612 students, 98% passed the math portion.

Out of the 598 students tested at Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon, 98% passed the English and math sections.

At Monte Vista High School in Danville, 99% of the 575 students passed the English portion, and out of 579 students, 99% passed the math portion.

At San Ramon Valley High School in Danville, 98% of the 510 students passed the English portion, and out of 512 students, 98% passed the math portion.

At Del Amigo continuation high school in Danville, nine students were tested but the education department did not release the results, saying the number of pupils is too small for statistical accuracy or privacy protection.

  1. All parents should have a look at this test and they will most likely realize that a 98% pass rate is no great feat. We should expect this result since the test is easy for our high school students. Middle school students and a good percentage of our 5 and 6 graders should have no trouble passing this test. I wish the district would quit tooting it’s own horn and just improve the quality of our kids education.
