Forest Home Farms Historic Park and the Glass House Museum in San Ramon will be presenting an exhibition called “Destination México” until Dec. 13.

Starting in the 1880s, private companies and entrepreneurs in the United States began promoting tourism to Mexico, labeling the country “a Foreign Land a Step Away.”

“Destination México” shows eight decades of tourist travel to Mexico, from the first rail connections in the mid-1880s to the advent of the jet age in the late 1950s.

The exhibition displays a large collection of mementos from many tourists’ travels — such as post cards, saved leaflets and organized snapshots from the Boone Family Collection. In addition, “Destination México” examines the influence of political and economic conditions in Mexico and the U.S., as well as technological developments on tourism.

The exhibition is open to the public and is a part of the tour of the Glass House Museum. It is organized by the DeGolyer Library at Southern Methodist University, the Clements Center for Southwest Study, and Humanities Texas — the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Forest Home Farms and the Glass House Museum are open to the public on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Docent lead tours are available at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m.; $5 per person. Private group tours and student education tours are also available weekdays by appointment. To arrange group visits, contact Sharon Peterson at 973-3282.

Forest Home Farms Historic Park is located at 19953 San Ramon Valley Boulevard.
