A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer remained hospitalized Friday after suffering serious injuries in a collision with two cars on Interstate 680 in San Ramon on Thursday evening, CHP officials said Friday.
The officer is expected to recover, CHP Dublin area Officer Derek Reed said.
Reed did not release the officer’s name but said the officer is a CHP veteran.
The injury collision happened around 5:20 p.m. Thursday on northbound Highway 680 near Crow Canyon Road, according to the CHP.
A Honda Civic and a Ford minivan in the roadway’s high-occupancy vehicle lane collided and the officer, unable to avoid them, crashed into the minivan, according to the CHP.
The officer was thrown from the motorcycle and landed in the roadway median next to the median wall.
The officer was airlifted to an area hospital for treatment and remained there as of Friday afternoon.
The roadway was completely closed to accommodate the helicopter landing, and two northbound lanes remained closed for about 2.5 hours on Thursday evening.
The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
The CHP said in a statement that motorists are reminded to “be attentive to their surroundings while driving, eliminate distractions and always check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes or turning.”
