A Dougherty Valley High School senior was chosen as one of three second-place finishers awarded $75,000 in the Intel Science Talent Search (STS), which recognizes young innovators in the United States who are creating technologies and solutions that aim to positively impact people’s lives.
Saranesh Prembabu, 17, won the “Second Place Medal of Distinction for Innovation” for his study on artificial nanostructures and their electrical and magnetic behavior.
“I was not expecting to win a prize, so being chosen for second place in the innovation category was truly a pleasant surprise and an amazing honor,” said Prembabu. “This award further motivates me to explore science with enthusiasm and creativity.”
Prembabu competed against 39 other U.S. high school seniors during the event, held March 5-11 in Washington, D.C. Two other competitors were from the Tri-Valley, Augustine Chemparathy from Dougherty Valley and Janel Lee from Pleasanton’s Amador Valley High School.
Prembabu and the other finalists were selected from 300 semifinalists and more than 1,800 entrants.
The Intel STS award is just one of Prembabu’s achievements. In December, he was one of 20 students nationwide to be invited to attend Nobel Week in Sweden — where he served as a U.S. representative.
“We are proud to have such an outstanding young scientist at the San Ramon Valley Unified School District,” superintendent Mary Shelton said. “Saranesh is a wonderful example of what students can do through a dedication to STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math).”

Congratulations Saranesh. Thank you for putting San Ramon on the map!
Saran is also an Eagle Scout in San Ramon. Congratulations Saran!
Wow! That is impressive. Congratulations on a fabulous achievement.
What a great achievement young Mr. Prembabu!! bask in your awesomeness 🙂
