With the impacts of the statewide drought continuing to be felt locally, government and public-service officials are coming together in Danville for a free workshop on water conservation, composting and recycling.
The event, set for this Tuesday afternoon in downtown Danville, is a coordinated effort by the town of Danville, the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), waste hauler Republic Services and RecycleSmart (the common name for the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority).
Republic Services recycling coordinator Kimberly Lam will be on hand from 1-2 p.m. to discuss recent changes in solid-waste services for Danville customers, highlighting what refuse goes in which collection cart and how residents can maximize recycling and composting to help reduce water.
Republic Services will hand out free food-scrap pails for central Contra Costa residents, workshop organizers said.
RecycleSmart composting expert Billi Haug will also speak during the first part of the workshop, discussing home composting and grass-cycling — the process of leaving freshly mown grass clippings on lawns, allowing them to decompose and provide nutrients to soil.
The second part of the workshop will focus on water reduction, with a presentation by EBMUD water conservation supervisor Charles Bohlig.
He will discuss top water-conservation strategies, including how residents can test their water infrastructure at home, such as determining if they have leaky toilets or inefficient shower heads.
EBMUD will distribute free water-saving devices while supplies last, event organizers said.
“The workshop is an excellent opportunity for residents to learn how to conserve water and make the most out of their enhanced garbage and recycling services,” Nat Rojanasathira, Danville’s assistant to the town manager, said in a statement. “The free take-home water-saving devices and food-scrap pails will be especially useful for residents.”
The free event is being held Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m. inside the Veterans Memorial Building, 115 E. Prospect Ave. in downtown Danville.
Space is still available for the workshop, organizers said. RSVPs are requested but not required to help organizers plan for attendance. Those interested in attending can register online.
