A California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer sustained moderate injuries after hitting a car part while riding on Interstate 680 in Danville on Monday morning, according to an agency spokesman.
The incident, which occurred just after 9 a.m. near the El Cerro Boulevard/El Pintado Road exit, deadlocked northbound I-680 traffic with all lanes closed for about an hour during the investigation and cleanup.
The injured CHP officer, whose name was not released, was assigned to the agency’s San Jose area office.
The crash happened when the front tire of the officer’s motorcycle struck a “wheel assembly” sitting on the freeway, throwing the officer from his motorcycle, according to officer John Fransen, of the CHP Contra Costa office. Investigators aren’t sure how the car part ended up on the roadway.
A semi-truck and a Toyota Camry also hit the wheel assembly after the motorcycle crashed, according to Fransen.
The injured CHP officer suffered undisclosed moderate injuries. “We are all wishing him a speedy recovery and are thankful he will be returning to his family soon,” Fransen said.
Anyone who witnessed how the wheel assembly wound up on the freeway can contact CHP-Contra Costa at 978-3918.

CHP motorcycle patrol officers need to start riding with some protective gear other than deerskin gloves and khaki short sleeve shirts which offer no protection,,, especially in an accident like this.
Practice what your preach, start riding with some real protective gear, why should the public pay the tab for injuries & time off that could have easily been prevented and/or lessened through common sense.
Yes, shame on that motorcycle officer for running in to that freeway debris, and causing us to cover his injuries. For want of a better shirt, he would have motored away unscathed…really?!
I’m grateful for all that the CHP provides, and have no issue if my tax dollars pay a few pennies toward this man’s recovery.
