The first of the two Danville Hot Summer Nights Car Shows is set for this Thursday on Hartz Avenue downtown.
This marks the 21st year of the traditional event during which muscle cars, hot rods and vintage vehicles line the streets of downtown Danville along with souvenir and food vendors. Live bands will also play classic tunes from the 1950s and ’60s.
The show is set to run from 4-9 p.m. with staging and registration to begin at 2 p.m.
In honor of the 60th anniversary of the Ford Thunderbird, organizers have invited owners of T-birds of all years to participate in Hot Summer Nights this week and during the second show set for Aug. 13.
Hot Summer Nights will also honor all years of Ford Mustangs and Pontiac GTOs from 1964 through 2015 in a belated celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Mustang and GTO which was last year.
The “Town Choice Awards” will be distributed to 20 car owners with the most likeable cars as a symbol of appreciation for participating in the event, organizers said. There is no point system or special qualifications associated with the award.
The police chief, mayor and vice mayor, town council members and car show management will present the Town Choice plaques to the winners.
As Danville prepares for the large crowd expected to attend the car show, town officials have released a traffic advisory for residents and motorists. From 2-10 p.m. Thursday Hartz Avenue and East Prospect Avenue will be closed to traffic.
Other streets to be affected by the event are:
* Linda Mesa Avenue between Railroad Avenue and Rose Avenue
* Diablo Road between Hartz Avenue and Rose Avenue
* Diablo Road at Front Street, westbound
* Local traffic access only between Front Street and Rose Avenue on Diablo Road and Front Street north to Linda Mesa Avenue
* Prospect Avenue between the Clock Tower Municipal Parking Lot entrance and Front Street
* Church Street 50 feet west and east of Hartz Avenue.
Town officials urge motorists to drive with caution and be aware of heavy pedestrian traffic. Railroad Avenue or Front Street are available as alternate routes through downtown, officials said.

Wonderful community gathering, this special Danville car show. We run into folks that we haven’t seen for years. And the music people are always outstanding. Thank you, Danville!
Too bad San Ramon can’t do something like Hot Summer Nights, but guess that would take some creativity.
What’s wrong with one car show in August. Two is a bit much. Same old same old. It’s pretty boring a 2nd time around.
It’s not boring to me, there’s always some different classic cars, and talking to their owners is more than half the fun. If two shows are too much for you, then only go to one. It’s good for business too.
Resident – Where would you suggest that San Ramon put such an event?
