The San Ramon Parks and Community Services Commission is set Wednesday (Aug. 12) to consider approving the conceptual plan for a park at the new Bella Vista Elementary School, now under construction in the Dougherty Valley.

The 2.6-acre park concept, prepared by landscape architect Nuvis and developer Toll Brothers, calls for a multi-use play field for various sports, youth-level baseball/softball field, perimeter walking path, school park sign, drinking fountain, and trash and recycling bins.

The park, planned as a joint-use facility for the city and San Ramon Valley Unified School District (SRVUSD), would be located at the Bella Vista site, approximately a half-mile southwest of the Dougherty Station Community Center and Library in a yet-undeveloped area of the Dougherty Valley.

The school, expected to open for the start of the 2016-17 school year, is being built by the SRVUSD and is primarily funded through the Measure D school facilities bond.

The park would be constructed by Toll Brothers, which is required to dedicate parkland as part of its development of the Dougherty Valley, according to Karen McNamara, city public services director.

The park would be available for public use during non-school hours — after school lets out weekdays and all day on weekends and school breaks, McNamara said. Restrooms at the Bella Vista multipurpose room would be open to park-goers during those times.

The city would be responsible for maintenance and scheduling of sports events at the park.

The Parks and Community Services Commission will be asked to provide input to the architect and approve the conceptual plan Wednesday evening.

With approval, Nuvis could begin the construction drawing phase. Following city review of those plans, park construction would begin this fall with completion to coincide with school opening in fall 2016, according to McNamara.

The commission meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the city council chambers at 2222 Camino Ramon.
