Representatives of Comcast Business joined city, business and community members in recognizing the company’s extended fiber-based Internet network in western San Ramon during a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony at Coliseum Tile — one of the small businesses served by the new, higher-speed network.

Comcast Business spent more than $250,000 to install over 1.5 miles of underground and aerial fiber in the business community west of Interstate 680 north of Deerwood Road, offering more bandwidth and faster connections to dozens of businesses in the area, company officials said.

“With access to high-speed Internet, local companies are able to achieve their full potential,” said Ted Girdner, vice president of Comcast Business for California. “This expansion enables businesses in San Ramon to grow and expand, supporting new job creation and bolstering economic opportunities.”

Mayor Bill Clarkson commended Comcast Business for the upgrades in San Ramon.

“When exploring new office locations, access to high-speed broadband is a top consideration for prospective tenants,” Clarkson said in a statement. “Comcast’s investment in the San Ramon community ensures we are adequately prepared to both welcome new companies to the area, as well as support the continued growth of our local businesses.”

The extended network provides the businesses with Ethernet capacity up to 10 Gbps (Gigabits per second), according to Comcast Business.

Coliseum Tile on San Ramon Valley Boulevard expects the new Internet speed to allow employees to better multitask on their computers while simultaneously using tablets, smartphones and other devices to work with customers on the company’s wireless connection, according to tile designer Daisy Neske.

“Not only will the increased speeds allow us to better serve our customers, they’ll allow us to be more productive, eliminating time spent waiting for large files to transfer,” Neske said in a statement.

The ceremonial ribbon-cutting for the new network took place Oct. 28 at Coliseum Tile, located at 2191 San Ramon Valley Blvd.
