A Pleasanton football player was airlifted to a local hospital Thursday evening after sustaining an injury during a game at California High School in San Ramon, according to Pleasanton Unified and San Ramon Valley fire officials.

San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District firefighters received a call from personnel at Cal High shortly after 6:30 p.m. saying a football player was hurt on the field, according to battalion chief Jim Selover.

Firefighters responded to the scene and found a 14-year-old boy lying on the ground. He was alert, oriented and moving all his extremities, but complained of pain in his upper back and numbness and tingling on his left foot and hand, Selover said.

As a precaution, the student was flown to Children’s Hospital in Oakland for further evaluation.

“We wanted to get him to the best place we could to get him checked out,” Selover said.

The student’s current condition is not known. His name was not released.

Thursday’s 5:30 p.m. game was the second of the season for the freshmen teams. The Cal High junior varsity and varsity teams played as scheduled at Foothill High School in Pleasanton on Friday.
