A fundraising “Red Carpet Casino Night” event is set for next weekend to support Jake Javier, a former San Ramon Valley High football star who was paralyzed in a pool accident on the eve of his high school graduation in June.
Organized by a group of family and friends to provide key financial assistance for Javier’s ongoing rehabilitation, the “Casino Night” is scheduled for 5-11 p.m. Sept. 24 at Blackhawk Plastic Surgery, located at 3600 Blackhawk Plaza Circle.
The fundraiser will feature a variety of casino games, raffle prizes, live and silent auctions, dinner and cocktails, with proceeds benefiting Javier’s family, organizers said. For ticket and sponsorship information, visit the event webpage.
Javier, who was paralyzed below the chest as a result of the June 9 pool accident, is now continuing his treatment in Colorado after being transferred earlier this month from the Bay Area to the Craig Hospital outside Denver, according to the latest update from supporters on the Jake Keola Javier’s Recovery Page on Facebook.
A star lineman for the San Ramon Valley Wolves, Javier was set to be a preferred walk-on offensive lineman this fall at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he was enrolled to study mechanical engineering.
The local teen’s recovery, which became national sports news, has drawn a range of support during the past three-plus months, including local fundraisers, messages of encouragement from pro athletes and other figures, public displays of support at local schools, online donations and through the use of the #JaviStrong hashtag on social media.
The Blackhawk Museum hosted a gala fundraiser to support the Javier Special Needs Trust last month. The event raised nearly $400,000, according to Jake Keola Javier’s Recovery Page on Facebook.
