The Danville Hoots baseball team — made up of high school players from Amador Valley, De La Salle, Granada, San Ramon Valley, Livermore, Dublin and Dougherty Valley, to name a few — were one of 17 teams to qualify for the recent Connie Mack World Series.

The tournament that took place in Farmington, N.M., from July 28 to Aug. 6 featured some of the best youth baseball teams in the country. The Hoots, managed by longtime local baseball coach Don Johns, may have entered the tournament as underdogs, but didn’t come out that way.

Battling throughout the tournament, the Hoots reached the final game, playing in front of 6,000 spectators where they fell to the team from Midland, Ohio.

The Hoots received a lot of recognition for their fine play. Sam Dinnerman (SS) of Campolindo, Mason LeGate (P) of DLS, Nick Santiago (OF) of DLS and Luke O’Brien (2B) of DLS made the All-Tournament team. In addition, O’Brien received the Gold Glove award as the top defensive player of the tournament.

Other Hoots such as Jared Wilson of Amador, Nick Krauth of Northgate, Ryan Cole of DLS, Zack Patterson of Granada and Gabe Giosso of DLS received player of the game recognition during the nine games played by the Hoots.

The Hoots also received the Team Sportsmanship award.

Water skiing regionals

Four Pleasanton water skiers from age 13 to 60-plus competed in the Western Regional Championships in Newberry Springs from July 24-29.

There were three different disciplines in the event — slalom, trick and jump.

Representing Pleasanton on the podium were Richelle Muhlitner (62 years old) with a fifth in Women’s 6 slalom and a third in tricks; Evan McNerney (13) at fifth in the Boys’ 2 jump and overall; and Scott McNerney (52) with a third in Men’s 4 tricks, fifth in jump and fifth 5th overall. Just missing the podium by one buoy in Men’s 4 slalom was Matt Brandt (47), who finished seventh.

Evan McNerney was also sixth in tricks and eighth in slalom in the Boys’ 2 event.
