The deadline for the Republic Services-sponsored waste reduction grant applications is fast-approaching, as is the organization’s 11-day-long canned food drive.

The $1,500 grant will be awarded to a community waste reduction project within the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority (RecycleSmart) service area. Applications must be submitted online by Oct. 20 and the winner will be chosen by Central Contra Costa residents, who will be able to vote on the Republic Services website from Nov. 1-30.

Projects must somehow by related to recycling, composting or other waste-reduction initiatives — they can be new projects or already-existing ones in need of expansion.

The Republic Services’ RecycleSmart service are includes Alamo, Blackhawk, Danville, Diablo, Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda and Walnut Creek.

In other upcoming news for the organization, RecycleSmart with Republic Services is partnering with the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano for a canned food drive lasting from Oct. 16-27.

Local drop-off locations include the Danville Library at 400 Front St., the Danville town offices at 510 La Gonda Way and the Danville Veterans Memorial Building & Senior Center at 115 E. Prospect Ave. The most-needed foods include the following items:

*Natural peanut butter

*Whole grain cereal and oats

*Hearty low sodium soups and chili

*Canned tuna and chicken in water

*Canned fruits and vegetables

*Beans, lentils and brown rice

*Whole grain pasta

*Canned tomato products
